i feel the need to give a warning that the photos i have are pretty much conventional travel photos, and are not taken with any special camera equipment, and that this turned out to be a bigger job than i thought and i don't have the energy to do more yet, and maybe i never will. i think it's possible to get what the experience of travel is like from watching movies or reading books, to some extent. maybe certain personality types can actually get more out of observing from a distance... like there's not the same awkwardness, and self- consciousness. you can imagine you fit in. when you're there in person, you're aware of all the things that always make you uncomfortable. well, maybe for moments here and there i have felt a kind of freedom, awe, and pleasure in new surroundings, and even through layers of depression and disillusionment, i have been able to see the beauty in what i have experienced. i haven't ever found a place i feel i 'belong', though, and there's always been this nagging discomfort, and eventually all travel becomes an endurance contest. a lot of the time when travelling, i have scoped out the suicide possibilities.
i think that being able to say that i've travelled here and there helps to protect me. it's something i can use to intimidate certain people, in a way. it's something that gives the impression that i'm more together than i am. but i don't think it's important to be able to give that impression. in fact, i'd rather not. i will say that i feel grateful to have had the opportunity to travel to different places, but that seeing photos and hearing descriptions probably gives a misleading impression as to what i actually felt and experienced in these places.
